Cell Cultured Meat – Quality Food for Your Health

Meat is a great source for protein, but eating it may be problematic for some people who are concerned about animal welfare. In that case, there is cell-cultured meat, which is made out of the cells from a living animal (i.e. a cow). The cells are harvested painlessly from the animal’s muscle and then fed and nurtured to multiply it and create the muscle tissue, a major aspect of the meats humans eat. The result is a meat tissue which is biologically similar to that of conventional meat, but without slaughtering the animal.

A growing importance

The demand for meat continues to increase over time. It is set to increase further in the next 40 years, according to a survey conducted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN. We are currently using non-sustainable production methods to meet up the requirements. As a result, meat is likely to become pricier and considered luxury items due to the increased demand for crops for its production, unless sustainable alternatives are discovered.

Livestock is also contributing to global warming as it releases a greenhouse gas called ‘methane’, which has 20 times more potency over carbon dioxide. So, with an increase in livestock demand, levels of nitrous oxide, carbon dioxide, and methane can reduce biodiversity. Cell-cultured meat can be a sustainable alternative to conventional ones. 

How it’s good for you

Conventional meat products are not good for health when consumed regularly. According to research, they increase your risk of developing diabetes, heart disease, and some types of cancer. Meat that is grown in a lab may be a better alternative that can let you enjoy the meaty texture and flavour of your favourite meat, but healthier.

Not every lab-grown food is bad for you. With cell cultured meat, you do not have to worry about growth hormones, saturated fats, and heme iron. In growing cultured meat, there is more control over the fat content, and there is an option of replacing saturated meat with healthier ones, like omega-3 fatty acids. Moreover, it helps reduce the spread of infectious diseases between animals and humans.
